"When I was a little girl, I was a very typical little girl, at least for a number of years. In third grade, my family moved from a farmette to a larger farm out in the country near St. Augustine, Pennsylvania. My mother never wanted the dogs and cats in the house, so they had to stay outside. On this farm we had a variety of animals—bunnies in cages, their feet chewed off by rats, cats who chased the rats, chickens—both running loose and in coops, cows, a horse, and sometimes pigs, most of whom ended up on our dinner plates. Our black lab ran the neighborhood and we had a chained beagle named Maggie...yet during that time, I was more concerned with me, and certainly would not have noticed much about the suffering of the animals or how they died, this came on by degrees..."
